Diving Deep, Rising Stronger: 10 Freediving Lessons for Stress Management and Peak Performance on a Freediving Competition

Growing up I was never the athletic type. While I excelled in academics, physical activities were a constant struggle. Watching my peers succeed while I lagged behind was disheartening. With asthma and chronic tracheitis, exercise was even more difficult. Becoming an athlete seemed like an impossible dream.

But I refused to give up. At 37, I discovered freediving, and now, just a few years later, I'm among the top 30 freedivers in China, even securing 3rd place with a prize in a recent competition. This journey taught me that limitations, physical, mental, or age-related, shouldn't stop you from pursuing your dreams.

While my fitness journey began years ago, freediving is unique. It's more mental than physical, requiring a lowered heart rate and complete relaxation, the opposite of most sports. It demands complex skills and the ability to manage stress underwater.

These lessons are invaluable beyond freediving, especially in high-pressure environments.  Here are 10 key lessons I've learned that can help you master stress, achieve peak performance, and build resilience:

1. Breathe with Intention: Intentional breathing is key in freediving and life. It controls anxiety, sharpens focus, and unlocks peak performance under pressure.

2. Stay Present: Success in freediving comes from staying mentally present. The same applies to work and life. Focus on the now to manage stress, avoid feeling overwhelmed, and perform at your best.

3. Prepare for the Unexpected: The ocean, like life, is unpredictable. Build resilience and adaptability by preparing for changes and adjusting without letting stress take over.

4. Prioritize Recovery: Overworking without rest leads to burnout. In freediving and life, recovery is vital for peak performance and sustained success.

5. Trust Your Training: Preparation is key in both sports and work. Being well-prepared makes stress manageable and allows you to perform at your best when it matters most.

6. Mental Strength is Everything: Freediving is as much a mental game as a physical one. Build mental resilience to stay calm, focused, and perform optimally under pressure.

7. Celebrate the Small Wins: In freediving, every meter counts. Celebrate small achievements to stay motivated and avoid burnout. Focus on progress, not perfection, to fuel your journey to peak performance.

8. Listen to Your Body: Ignoring fatigue leads to poor performance and burnout. Pay attention to stress and fatigue signals early on to maintain optimal performance and well-being.

9. You’re Not Alone: Just as I have a support team, having a strong support system in work and life makes a huge difference in managing stress and achieving your goals.

10. Visualize Success: Before every dive, I visualize the process. Visualization is a powerful tool to reduce stress, enhance focus, and achieve peak performance.

Freediving taught me that you can transform your life and achieve peak performance by building mental and physical resilience. If you're feeling overwhelmed or stressed, these principles can help you regain control, find fulfillment, and reach new heights in your personal and professional life.
